and Energy. While up to 50 species of the lanky birch grow across the globe,
the one labeled as "birch" lumber and hardwood plywood is usually the
North American yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis). The other native species
are sweet birch (Betula lenta) and river birch (Betula nigra).Birch's hardness
makes working it with hand tools tremendously difficult, though it shapes
willingly with power and machine tools. This dedication gives birch high nail-
and screw-holding power. It also sands and finishes well, taking paint and
varnish commendably. However, birch has a predisposition to blotch when stained
exceptanall-pervading sealer is first applied.
A
wavy number becomes protuberant in veneers. Birch weighs about 43 pounds per
cubic foot dry and has great strength, rigidity, and shock resistance. It has
low deterioration resistance, however. Birch has long been favored for chests, flooring, tables,
chests, and cabinets. While its popularity with respect to furniture has
declined, birch's toughness and color still make it viable in comparison with
the other hardwoods. Birch, owing to its toughness, is not preferred for
carving. On the other hand, it turns well and could be used for circuitously
designed posts, equipment legs, and balusters. Small accessories such as
finials, dowel rods, toy wheels, and shaker pegs are characteristically made
from birch. Most birch veneer is rotary-cut, and sold as either natural color,
which includes heartwood and sapwood, or select white from sapwood.

very little sapwood. The heartwood color differs from cream to light brown
tinged with red and has a separate but not irresistible grain pattern in the
birch wood market.
